Parents and educators know they need to get their students ready for whatever the future holds. One of our schools that is leading the way is Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy, a college-prep school that fosters both academic and spiritual growth in their students. CVCA is dedicated to making sure all their students are future-ready, and in doing so they are always looking for ways to expand the horizons and opportunities for their learners. This is just one of the many reasons why parents choose CVCA to educate their children.
When looking at teaching coding, design, marketing, entrepreneurship, business ethics, and web technologies, CVCA was intrigued by the possibility of offering students opportunities to get industry-based certifications with international appeal and give their students an edge in the real-world after high school. CVCA chose to work with CTeLearning due to our engaging curricula and our unique partnership with
Web Professionals Global, the industry association for all web professionals.
Alicia C. is a Teacher and the Director of the School of Business & Entrepreneurship at CVCA who is currently teaching the CTeLearning Web Design course to her students. CVCA is the first private school in Ohio to take advantage of the “Learn and Earn certification model” in which students use their class work experience as sweat equity to earn the Web Designer Certification from Web Professionals Global. By building real-world projects to earn these certifications, students have tangible portfolios and third-party credentials to get a headstart in their educational or professional careers upon graduation from high school.
Steve Waddell, founder and lead developer of CTeLearning, had this to say about working with Alicia and her inspiring students:
“Alicia’s students are fantastic and as sharp as they come. During the year we even had some of her students discover missing commas and a couple misspelled words. This was terrific, and since all our teachers have direct connections to our development team, those editorial goofs were fixed, literally in minutes. This told us that her students were actively engaged in the curriculum and were hanging on every word, which showed in the overall success and the level of web design that came from her two classes.”
How have you enjoyed teaching the Web Design course?
It’s been great to introduce students to something that seems so foreign to them even though they interact with the subject matter on a daily basis.
What do you enjoy about the teaching world compared to working in industry?
The teaching world allows me to leave an impact on the next generation and share my skills and knowledge, as well as life wisdom, with those who will be leading the world before long. It’s extremely fulfilling and exciting to see them when the light bulb comes on and the content is finally clicking!
What does it mean to get your students “future-ready?”
It’s not just about a field-specific subject matter. Our students need to be ready to be adaptable, teachable, and grow with a variety of soft skills, including collaboration, critical thinking, creative design, and teamwork. Focusing on these skills goes a lot further than just focusing on the facts!
How cool has it been to see the impact that the course has had on students?
It’s been great seeing those students who originally thought they wouldn’t be able to do it and considered actually dropping the class turn around and end up being some of my top-performing students! When the students can actually see the fruits of their labor in seeing a website they fully designed and coded, you see the feeling of accomplishment in them, making it all worth it.
One of your students didn’t have many academic interests before discovering this course–what has it been like seeing him finally engaged in something he enjoys?
This student continues to dig into the world of web design and development, as he’s fully bought into the joy of learning! Once it finally clicked with him, he saw the limitless possibilities. He’s moved on completely independently learning JavaScript, React, and so much more. He even created his own web design company and is offering his services to build his portfolio and skills!
What would you say to other teachers who are interested in teaching this course?
Don’t be afraid to make it work for you and your students! Know what YOUR goals are for your students, and don’t forget to remind the students what the goals are as well.
What has it been like working with the team at CTeLearning?
The team at CTE Learning is INCREDIBLE when it comes to being responsive and flexible. They not only responded many times within just a few minutes, but they also accepted constructive feedback, even adding in content that was suggested as useful!
